Plein Aire: (French for open air); term applied since 1850 to artists who paint scenes outdoors directly from observation. Some Plein Aire painters included Monet, Pissaro, Renoir, Sisley, Sargent, and others. A Plein Aire painting should be painted on a small 8 x10 to 11 x 14 panel in one sitting usually completed in one to two hours, before the light changes. It's usually done painterly. Painterly: appearing free in style or technique with more use of mass than of lines; having the effect of spontaneous, expert paint application.
