Plein Aire: (French for open air); term applied since 1850 to artists

who paint scenes outdoors directly from observation.  Some Plein Aire painters included

Monet, Pissaro, Renoir, Sisley, Sargent, and others.  A Plein Aire painting should be

painted on a small 8 x10 to 11 x 14 panel  in one sitting usually completed in one to

 two hours, before the light changes.  It's usually done painterly.

Painterly appearing free in style or technique with more use of mass than of lines;

having the effect of spontaneous, expert paint application.

"I call these small treasures of pieces of paint."  ~~Patsy Arrington Dorsett
